I recently started work on a new instrument, a Salter, after Thomas Perry 1777.
(Yes, I was calling it a Sultana in that last blog. Having carefully re-read Poulopoulos and Durkin again, I have decided to call it a Salter, despite the opportunities for confusion!)
First progress report, I have rebuilt the rib structure based on the outline I took at the National Museum in Dublin. As you can see I have also fitted the linings and prepared the mortice for the neck joint. Perry used a single nail in the instruments I’ve looked at, and I plan to do the same with a simple mortice and tenon.
The next challenge for me is the tuners, which is my main focus for the next few weeks. More soon.
